The attack on Shaukat Ali, a resident of Biswanath district, for selling beef has given us a serious note of concern and puts a question on the entire human race.
The existing video clip of the incident circulated on social media showed Ali being targeted and abused by a mob. While the faces of the attackers are not visible, their voices can be heard. The video has voices, which seems to ask Ali question like- “Why did you come to sell beef here?”, “Are you a Bangladeshi?” followed by “Is your name on the NRC?”
Ali has been running a line hotel in the area since 35 years. The mob suddenly attacked him in the weekly market of the area, which later forced him to eat pork, thus hurting his religious sentiments.
The police have registered a case (No. 80/ 2019) under sections 143, 341, 325, 294(a), 295-A, 153- A(b) and 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Assam Police have also arrested the main culprit, identified as Dipen Gogoi, in relation to the case.
The All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) on April 9th, 2019 has also sent a letter to the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding a judicial inquiry and stern action against the culprits behind the incident in Biswanath Chariali.
